Q & A
This is a compiled list of questions that I've received from people who have e-mailed me with questions regarding the swap.
1. Q: Will your car get crankwalk; Can this block get crankwalk; Did yours show any signs of crankwalk; etc etc
A: I have got a lot of questions about this one. Yes this block can and will get crankwalk if it is not put together right. I have tried to cover as many things that I can on my site to prevent this from happening. That is of course no guarantee that it won't happen. One thing to note is that if you have a screwed up thrust bearing within the first 1K or so of the rebuild this is not crankwalk, it is a problem with assembly. Real crankwalk will take over 60K to develop.
2. Q: Where did you get your engine from for the project?
A: The engine I used in my project was from a 95-97 Eclipse Spyder, that doesn't mean that's where you have to get yours from. You can also use one from a Galant, so long as the transmission bell housing is the right size.
3. Q: Will the engine drop in or do I need aftermarket motor mounts.
A: The Spyder engine is a direct swap. The 2G 7-bolt 63 and the 64 block are nearly identical with the exception of the oil squirters, the deck height, a small area near the oil filter housing, the extra oil drain ports, and the cylinder diameter. All of which I covered on my site. You can even use the 63 rods because they are the same, this also means rods that work for the 2G 7-bolt 63 will work for the 64. This also means that the 2G turbo tranny and 7-bolt flywheel will bolt directly to it, without modification along with all the accessories. If you are using the G64B block in your build then of course you will use a 1G flywheel.
4. Q: What about oil squirters? Can I use the ones from a 63 block?
A: I didn't use squirters, I didn't feel they where needed. You can use 2G oil squirts in the block but you will have to drill and tap for them.
5. Q: What about a 2.4L in a 1G? Is there a 6-bolt 2.4L version?
A: Yes there is a 2.4L version of the 6-bolt it is the G64B. That means if you want a 2.4L 1G find yourself a G64B and it will be a simple drop in. The G64B and the 4G64 differ in that the G6 has a 6-bolt crank just like the 6-bolt 63 has. The 6-bolt stock rods will fit on the G64B crank the pin size is 22mm so you will need to order different pistons then the 7-bolt 2.4L project. Part numbers are listed on page one of the build. You can not put a 4G64(7-bolt) directly into a 1G the motor mounts are different, you must find a G64B. Here is a list of Mitsubishi motor codes for the various cars Mitsubishi Motor Applications Also here is a link to a guy who did the 6-bolt swap - Click ME
6. Q: Can I put a DOHC on my 3G Eclipse?
A: In short no, the engine has the same code but doesn't mean that it will work the same. I have heard that you may be able to swap an Evo DOHC onto the 4G64 bottom end of the 3G but I can't back that info up.
7. Q: What about the DOHC swap into a 4G64 Spyder, do you know how to do that?
A: It can be done and has been done before, there are several other sites that cover how to do it. The information I have on my page is very similar to what would be done to put a DOHC into a Spyder but there are a lot of things needed to do the swap that I don't cover. I don't have a lot of information on it because I don't have a Spyder. But here is a link that may help - Click Me
8. Q: Can I use my 2G DOHC head on the 4G64?
A: Yes, yes you can. Everything will bolt up just like stock including the cam shaft sensor.
9. Q: Can I put the 4G64 into my GS/RS?
A: No, and No. It can be done but you will need an entire front clip from a GS-T/X for all the parts that will be needed, including the wiring harness and ECU and money. If you want to have the 63/64 engine in you car please pick yourself up a GS-T/X version and go from there. I have heard that a 2.4L swap from some other Chrystler cars may work but I don't have info to back that up.
10. Q: How much did you spend on X part? How much did you spend for everything?
A: I have tried to put dollar amounts on parts where I could. I never wrote down the price for everything. Many of the things in my project where used or traded. The block only cost me $25 because the guy didn't want it so the price amounts you pay for things may be much higher than what I paid for them. I also bought things and ended up not even needing it. Besides that if I ever put a dollar amount on what I spent for everything and my wife found out, I am most certain she would kill me. :)
